What you need to know about CUPAL — clear answers with engineering precision

General

CUPAL (CU + AL) is a cold-roll bonded copper-aluminium bimetal composite: 70% aluminium, 30% copper. It is not an alloy — the two metal layers individually retain their own properties but are inseparably welded together. Its main purpose: preventing galvanic corrosion where copper and aluminium conductors meet.
Four standard thicknesses: 0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm. The standard sheet size is 500 × 2000 mm (1 m²). We are the only supplier in Hungary offering all 4 thicknesses — elsewhere you will find two at most.
Three reasons: 1) 49% lighter than solid copper. 2) Solves the galvanic corrosion problem because each side connects to its own metal. 3) Cheaper, because 70% is aluminium — less copper needed. Conductivity is 72% of pure copper, which is more than sufficient for most applications.
The CUPAL washer or transition plate sits between the copper and aluminium so that the copper side connects to the copper cable lug and the aluminium side to the aluminium busbar. On both sides, the same metal contacts the same metal — no potential difference, no galvanic corrosion. The transition zone is inside the plate, protected.

Products

Five options: Walzblank (mill finish, standard), Blank (bright), Geburstet (brushed), Satiniert (satin) and EDT (electro-discharge textured, isotropic surface). Standard orders ship with Walzblank; other finishes available on request.
Yes. The copper side can be soft-soldered and electroplated using standard processes, just like solid copper. Important: heat treatment should not exceed 260 °C for more than 4 hours, otherwise bond strength may decrease.

Ordering

Minimum 1 sheet (500 × 500 mm). For custom cutting, the minimum is also 1 sheet of base material. For washers there is no minimum — request a quote for exact pricing. Get a Quote →
Standard products (sheets, washers) ship from stock with short lead times. Custom cutting typically takes 5–10 business days, depending on shape complexity. The exact lead time is confirmed in the quote. Get a Quote →
Send us the shapes and dimensions in DXF, PDF or even JPG format — via chat, email or the form. If you don't have a drawing, simply describe the dimensions. We respond with a quote within 1 business day. Get a Quote →
DXF (AutoCAD), PDF (dimensioned drawing) and JPG/PNG (sketch with dimensions). For best results we recommend DXF, but a hand-drawn sketch is fine as long as the dimensions are noted.
Three ways: 1) Chat — on the website, we respond within a few hours. 2) Quote request form — fill it out and we get back to you. 3) Email — [email protected]. We respond within 1 business day.

Shipping

Yes, we ship throughout the entire European Union. Shipping costs depend on weight and destination country — the exact cost is included in the quote.
